Introduction

The topic of forgiveness is one that strikes a nerve in many people. It is an emotional issue and one we avoid, mainly because of our misunderstanding of what it really means.
Most people think that forgiveness is something we do for other people; that it means we aren’t mad anymore and we’re willing to ‘make up’ and be friends again. But what if we’re still mad and don’t want to be friends? What if we feel that some things don’t deserve our forgiveness? Do we have to hold on to our hurts for the rest of our lives? Well, sure you can do that. Many people do.
But there is another way of looking at forgiveness. In a very real sense forgiveness has nothing to to with other people. It has nothing to do with how we’ve been treated and how we feel about it.
In this book I want to take you through the different levels of forgiveness, from the way we have been taught it as a form of social ritual to the deeper levels of spiritual freedom. We’ll look at what we gain from not forgiving as well as the richer benefits of releasing ourselves from the past.
